Some of the Thyroid gland’s diseases are Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Goiter, Iodine deficiency, and autoimmune disease.
Hyperthyroidism also knows as “Overactive Thyroid”, happens when the thyroid makes too much thyroid hormones. If the thyroid releases too many hormones in a short amount of time it is called acute or if it releases too much hormones for a long period of time it is called chronic.
Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland produces fewer hormones than usual.
Goiter is one thyroid gland disease that causes swelling of thyroid gland. Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism are two of the primary causes of Goiter.
Iodine deficiency is when we do not get in enough iodine into our body. Since thyroid needs iodine to produce its hormones, a lack of iodine in the body will cause a thyroid's enlargement (Goiter). Graves disease, viral infection of thyroids , or having too much iodine could have cause hyperthyroidism.
Sometimes our body’s immune system malfunctions and our immune cells start to attack a specific body organ or cells. The antibodies are known as autoantibodies and this disease is called an autoimmune disease. Graves disease is one kind of autoimmune disorder.
