- The thyroid gland is located in front the trachea and below the larynx. It wraps around and lobes out on both sides, similar to a bowtie or butterfly. The epithelial cells (follicular cells) in the thyroid gland produce the hormones secreted.
Hormones
- Thyroxine is produced from the epithelial cells in the thyroid; calcitonin is produced in the spaces between the epithelial cells.
Function
- Thyroid hormones act throughout the body, influencing metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature. (Thyroxine and calcitonin regulate cell metabolism and reduce blood calcium, respectively.)
